KPC+ Modem

I have recently changed computers to a Win11 that does not support the old prolific USB to DB-25 connection on the modem.
Am I dead in the water with this setup for Packet? or do I have to get with the current century and change to a Signalink or similar sound card?

Please advise,

Jeff KE5FGA

I use Digirig on all my Winlink setups bit have buddies using signalinks with sucess as well

Good luck

I believe you can still install the old driver. I also have picked up the counterfeit ic’s with hot air and replaced with genuine ones that are supported
But i have a pile of aioc cables that are a little adventurous make a fine signal link replacement and they are like $6 all in.

I prefer Digirig over the other options as it includes a COM port for PTT.

Nope, doesn’t like it.

Jeff - If you still have the old profilic driver somewhere, you can install it manually to see if it works.

Jeff
what kinda radio you are using i have a dig rig for a yaseu here and a kenwood so if you are using either one let me know

Hi Jeff, If you like the equipment you are using, here are 2 choices to get back in operation:

  1. Buy a new USB to DB-25 cable and load the driver that comes with the cable. You can find these on ebay and amazon for less than $20 (some less than $10). If it says compatable with win 10, 11 thats the right choice since it will associate with the right driver.

  2. Find the driver for prolific PL2303, download it and be happy. If your cable is quite old, I guess driver 3.2.0.0 probably is the one. Google for info on how to do prolific driver install with win 11. Now, once you have the right driver working, in windows, lock the driver so windows cant do you a favor by trying to update to something that will not work.

After spending hours trying to get USB → DB-25 adapters working to support old KPC+ modems in the hospitals here, we threw in the towel and are switching over to Masters Communications DRAs. More folks here are using VARA FM, so it’s a win there as well. We have installation instructions from Tom N5TW.

With the use of the DRA modules for Vara FM and HF you can also use them with Packet. Just down load Soundmodem114 and PTT-DLL from the UZ7HO web site. All free. Also grab the users guide. Unzip both files to a new folder. Sondmodem will pick up the PTT-DLL file automatically when it runs.
