[stxares] Air Traffic Control & “This is”

I agree with Carl below. I have been the net control for the Galveston County Emergency Communications Group weekly net for many years and prefer the “This is” to two hams stepping on each other during check-in. I believe the “This is” takes less time then trying to straighten out who got left out, especially if both signals are garbled.

Agree with both these statements. Check ins are different from operational activities once the net is working for, say, a public service event.

The call should be “Net control this is turtle”. The station being called should be stated first to get their attention. Net control always has other activities that distract from concentrated listening. Giving the station’s call first means it will get lost while net control changes focus.

Traffic “collisions” do occur and with some frequency. I’m just a VFR pilot but use Houston airspace frequently. Terminal coms are Frequently jammed up especially at towered airports with lots of VFR traffic. As Rud alluded to, traffic there, physical and radio, is more random and less structured by flight rules than, say, Hobby or IAH.
Folks regularly get “stepped
In” at Bra_so_ri_a… Anyone who’s flown into LBX understands.
