WINLINK: Avoid excessive radio-only traffic (Hybrid gateways)

We are fortunate to have Winlink RMS gateway system operators who are willing to have their stations act as ‘Hybrid’ or allow radio-only forwarding on their gateways; please use this WInlink mail type sparingly and with caution as it does have the ability to adversely impact the Winlink radio network. We do not want to lose this capability!!

to Winlink

I believe in the importance of the Winlink Hybrid network as a last ditch mechanism should the CMS be offline due to an internet catastrophe but am considering dropping out as a Hybrid mode sysop due to the increasing levels of radio only testing tying up my station.

Unlike a CMS based email, radio only traffic has to be forwarded to each station on the distribution list. And many people have specified multiple Message Pickup Stations chewing up further bandwidth.

Testing this capability occasionally is not a bad thing but I am seeing multiple groups with increasing distribution lists regularly sending this traffic. Yesterday, one of these distributions attached a graphics file really slowing things down. My station was busy through much of yesterday distributing it.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, lets limit the amount of radio only testing and keep the messages short when you do test it.

There are not that many Hybrid stations and there is going to be one less soon if this keeps up. Please help spread the word on this!

Greetings David,

First thanks for your note about excess use of using the Gateway station. In the future I will be using TELNET only, because I spent 5 hours trying to link to a gateway and they all failed this past Thursday. In an emergency I do have the capabilities and have succeeded in passing traffic thru a Gateway in the past.

HI Dick - sorry to hear you are experiencing issues with connecting to RMS gateways. This note is not in reference to gateways in general but the use of 'Radio-ONLY" forwarding through RMS gateways. As a sysop of HF gateways I welcome the use of these gateways on a frequent basis!

David, again thanks for your comments back. I tied up a Gateway for a half hour + each time and was never able to pass the traffic. My Links were extremely slow. So as per my previous comments in an emergency I will use the radio linkage in the meantime I will do telnet thank you.

Tom,

I agree with what you stated about “radio only” testing messages with large attachments.
WHY? This really ties up a hybrid station sometimes for hours for your so call testing.
This also puts on extra wear and tear on our equipment that the station SYSOP purchased
Out of his pocket.

I stated and suggested to use NOMORE than two MPS. Remember you sent 1 test message to 5 Winlink users using
“Radio Only” procedures, the hybrid station that YOU just sent your message too now has to call 15 other RMS
station to send 1 message to 5 users MPS. Now if you have 5 Winlink HAMS do the same above you have now tied
Up multiple stations of hours just to TEST the system. You do the math and see if you would want YOUR equipment
tied up for TESTING.
